Madeira Island offers unique conditions for water sports during the whole year. The water temperature is pleasant and varies from 19ºC in the winter to 24ºC in the summer and the seas are usually gentle. This allows for a various set of activities that can be arranged for your group.

Here is some activities we have to offer for
nautical activities

Regatta Race

Discovery Island Madeira can also provide unforgettable moments of well being and adrenalin in the seas around Madeira using sailboats, each with its own skipper, so as to take part in a true race.

After the briefing all teams head out to their sailing boats, with the crew. All clients have between 15 and 20 minutes to adapt themselves to the boat and to draw a strategy with the skipper.

Start will be marked by a horn, and time starts to be counted. This time is calculated by each boat’s GPS and VHS signals. Each team is warned of start time at -10, -5 and -1 minutes. The course to be taken will be arranged with participants beforehand, and depends entirely on wind and sea conditions.

The Santa Maria of Columbus is a faithful replica of the ancient Portuguese ships of the 15th and 16th centuries. The whole crew wears period clothing. The ambiance of the caravel and its journey along the south coast of Madeira gives participants an experience of what it would be like in the past, as well as the possibility to see whales and dolphins.

Catamaran Trip

Come aboard a comfortable catamaran for a relaxing journey along the south coast of Madeira. In these leisure trips the clients will be awed by the beauty of the Madeiran coast, and they get the chance to see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. If you wish so, you can dive in the clear waters off Cabo Girão. If the winds are favourable, prepare to hoist the sails, a uniquely relaxing feeling.

Madeira is known for its big game fishing, as it is on the migratory route of various species, besides those that reside here throughout the whole year. Targeted species are usually the blue marlin, the white marlin, tuna, mackerel, swordfish and the barracuda, amongst others. There’s the possibility of keeping part of the captured fish, or releasing it, except in the case of the blue marlin, in which case it is mandatory to release it.

In other countries this activity takes place far from the coast, but in Madeira this is not necessary because of the great depth of the sea around the island. In Madeira’s case it is performed some 2 to 3 miles from the coast.

Each boat carries four fishers, and can hold six people.

In this competition, all boats leave at the same time and will head out to the same area, except for the necessary safety margins.

There’s the possibility of communicating through the VHS radios that exist in each boat. We can also include a support dinghy/juror for the competition. At the end trophies will be awarded to the winners, and a medal to all participants. Winners will be the ones catching the larger fish.
